Reformation Sunday at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Lancaster PA

Reformation Sunday at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Lititz, PA

On Reformation Sunday, Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Lancster, Pennsylvania, gathered around God’s Word and Sacraments to celebrate the Feast of the Reformation. This annual observance remembers the events that began in Wittenberg, Germany, on October 31, 1517, and the renewed proclamation of the Gospel that followed. More importantly, it directs Christians to the enduring promise that sinners are justified by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. We give thanks not simply for an important moment in Church history, but for the forgiveness, life, and salvation Christ continues to give His people.

Remembering the Lutheran Reformation

On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther presented his Ninety-Five Theses for theological discussion concerning repentance, indulgences, and the Church’s teaching. What began as an invitation to academic disputation soon spread throughout Europe, aided by the printing press. The Reformation sought to correct abuses and return the Church’s teaching and practice to the authority of Holy Scripture. Its central concern was the clear proclamation of Jesus Christ and His saving work for sinners.

The Gospel at the Heart of the Reformation

The Lutheran Reformation was never merely about changing church customs or challenging ecclesiastical authority. Its great theological concern was the comfort of the Christian conscience through the Gospel. Saint Paul teaches that a person is justified by faith apart from works of the Law (Romans 3:28), a truth confessed in Article IV of the Augsburg Confession. This remains the foundation of Lutheran preaching, worship, and Christian life today.

Reformation Sunday Divine Service and Sermon

Our congregation celebrated Reformation Sunday in the historic Lutheran Divine Service, receiving God’s gifts through His Holy Word and Sacraments. The appointed hymns, prayers, Scripture readings, and preaching directed our attention to Christ crucified and risen for our salvation. The Reformation reminds us that the Church’s confidence rests not in human accomplishments, but in the promises of God. This is why the Gospel continues to bring peace and certainty to troubled consciences.

A Reformation Theme: Our Confidence Is in Christ

A central truth of the Reformation is that forgiveness cannot be purchased, earned, or secured through our religious achievements. Salvation is God’s gracious gift, accomplished through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and received through faith. As Ephesians 2:8–9 teaches, we are saved by grace through faith, not by our own works. This biblical confession continues to shape the worship and teaching of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church.

Listen to the Reformation Sunday sermon recording here: Reformation Sunday Sermon on YouTube. We encourage members, guests, and neighbors throughout Lititz and Lancaster County to listen and reflect upon the Gospel proclaimed. The service bulletin is also available through the congregation’s usual bulletin resources. These materials provide an opportunity to revisit the Church’s confession throughout the week.

Adult Bible Class: Deuteronomy Chapter 10

Our Adult Bible Class continued its study of Holy Scripture with Deuteronomy chapter 10. Moses recounts receiving the second tablets of the Ten Commandments following Israel’s rebellion and the breaking of the first tablets. This account reminds us of God’s covenant faithfulness and the importance of hearing and keeping His Word. It also provides a rich opportunity to consider God’s mercy toward His people despite their repeated failures.

Those unable to attend can listen to the class recording online. The study offers an opportunity to grow in understanding the Old Testament and its place within the whole counsel of God. We welcome adults throughout Lititz and Lancaster County to join us in studying the Scriptures. Listen to the Deuteronomy 10 Adult Bible Class recording.
