Mount Calvary Lutheran Church Board of Witness and Outreach Update:

YOUR ELEVATOR SPEECH

What is your “Elevator Speech” when someone asks you, “Where do you go to church?” When I started my second career in 1995 in a male dominated construction rental industry, I went to as many business seminars that I could to learn various aspects of owning and operating a business. One that makes me chuckle as I look back on those days was learning about “the world wide web.”

Another seminar I found helpful was always being mentally prepared to talk about my business in an elevator speech. An elevator speech is a brief introduction that summarizes what my business did and why you should rent from me. It is called an elevator speech because it should be short enough to deliver during an elevator ride. I needed to connect with people and get them excited about my business and when they need something, to think about renting from me. So, I developed a speech and practiced at home and in the car while driving from Lancaster to Reading every day. I learned to add to my spiel as appropriate. I can still give that spiel since I used it frequently as it was helpful when I was growing the business and introducing myself to others.

So, why am I writing about this for the Beacon? How often are you asked, “Where do you go to church?” “Why do you go there?” “How is your Lutheran church different?” You may want to think about how you can answer those questions, so you are ready to invite them to visit Mount Calvary. Here is what I generally say about our church with sincerity and enthusiasm! I go to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church located on Petersburg Road in Neffsville – down the street from the Neffsville Flower Shop, and kind of across the street to the Manheim Township Community Park. We belong to the Missouri Synod – we are different from the other Lutheran churches in Lancaster. We are Bible based, meaning we believe what God says in the Bible, and we follow His words. We have a great congregation with lots of activities and families. Our pastor is wonderful! We recently renovated our sanctuary – it’s pretty – you should come check us out.

If more questions are asked, I answer as briefly as possible, always inviting them to come and check us out, stating our Sunday worship time of 9 AM with Sunday School following and Wednesdays at 7 PM. If conversation continues, I provide our website address so they can check us out that way, too. Do you know what that is? It is LancasterLutheran.com. It would be good for you to memorize that and look at our website occasionally! So, I’d enjoy hearing your Elevator Speech about Mount Calvary! Please give me your schpeel. – Submitted by Nancy Marshall
